Michael J Murschel, SD
Founder, Spiritual Director, Funeral Designer and Conductor
Michael J Murschel is a commissioned spiritual director, theologian, funeral designer, and funeral conductor, fluent in some 50 faith traditions and the blending of them. Over the past quarter-century, he has designed and conducted funeral, celebration of life, and memorial services, and provided mourning and grief aftercare, throughout the Chicago area.
In addition to credentialing as a Spiritual Director, Michael holds a Masters in Theology and Pastoral Care from Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, Hyde Park, Chicago, Illinois; and a Bachelor’s degree in Radio-TV-Film, with a strong minor in Classical Studies from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois.
He is a member of Spiritual Directors International; Cook County Funeral Directors Association; the Coalition of Elgin Religious Leaders; and the Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce. He is a member of St Thomas More Catholic Church, Elgin, Illinois; and an Oblate of St Benedict, Marmion Abbey, Aurora, Illinois.
Currently on teaching staff with Sacred Journey School of Spiritual Companioning, he has served on seminary staff, and with local congregations and regional denominational entities.
Most recently, Michael has founded the Funeral and Faith Forum to serve as an online and, when circumstances permit, an onsite training experience to provide certificate programs in faith-centered funeral service design and presiding, for spiritual directors, chaplains, clergy, and religious. The Forum also offers a community for the development of new funeral liturgies, discussion of current and pending funeral trends, and advocating for the inclusion of spiritual leaders in funeral planning, as well as designing new disposition technologies to include chapel space as appropriate.
